In their introduction to this special issue, which deals with the continuous and sustainable professionalisation of teachers of German as a foreign language through further education and training, the authors outline important trends and current challenges in the field of long-term professionalisation and in-service teacher training. The eleven articles cover theoretical and conceptual discussions, empirical studies and practical considerations, highlighting regional characteristics, specific challenges and needs with regard to in-service training for teachers of German as a foreign language. Based on findings from various national contexts, this issue promotes international and comparative debate on the professionalisation of GFL teachers.
