Abstract

The use of artificial intelligence in the teaching and learning of foreign languages is no longer a new phenomenon. Many language learning programs such as Duolingo, Babbel, Pimsleur, Lingoda etc. are well known to foreign language learners. These programs offer different approaches and methods to facilitate foreign language learning. With the rapid development of the AI model ChatGPT developed by OpenAI, the discussion about the use of AI in foreign language teaching and learning has become particularly heated since 2023. Accordingly, the question of how teachers should deal with artificial intelligence tools has also become a hot topic in teacher training. In this research paper, we present a pilot project by the Goethe-Institut on the use of AI tools in GFL lessons at PASCH schools in China and discuss the results of the project. Based on this, the opportunities and risks of this technology for GFL teachers are presented. The focus is on the didactic-methodical and practical competencies of the educators, so that both prospective and in-service GFL teachers can meet these demands.
