Advancing digitalization places new demands on the professional activities of teachers of German as a second language (GSL) and as a foreign language (GFL), which must be taken into account in the field of teacher training. Interdisciplinary, supra-regional standards for teachers' digital competencies, such as DigCompEdu (Redecker 2017), offer guidance in this regard, but require a subject-specific adaption. This paper uses the example of the DigCompEdu sub-area “assessment strategies” to illustrate how professional development programs for GSL/GFL teachers can be aligned with competence standards that have been tailored to subject-specific needs. Drawing on the development process of the training module "digital assessment of language proficiency", based on this sub-area, design principles for digitalization-related teacher training in the GSL sector are identified and subsequently examined for their applicability in the GFL context.
